Play Therapy

Children are not small adults, thus they are not as equipped to process their own emotions or communicate their problems verbally. Play therapy uses a very familiar and comfortable experience (playing) to get at the hurts and struggles your child is carrying.  Play therapists use play as a way to connect with the child and learn what difficulties they may be experiencing, they observe and gain insights into a child’s problems based on how they act during play therapy sessions. The therapist can then help the child explore emotions and deal with the difficulties and the child can learn new coping mechanisms and how to redirect inappropriate behaviors.

What to expect: Your child will meet with the therapist on a regular schedule. During each appointment your child is given toys to play with and the therapist will observe to gain a better understanding of your child’s difficulties. Play items may include art, games, or objects such as dolls or building blocks. The many different types of play help your child figure out feelings and express them. Children are always encouraged to share in their own time and with their own method of communication.
